FINDING POWER IN PERMIAN

The Permian Basin is the largest petroleum-producing basin in the United States, and one of the most prolific in the world. It is equally famous for its challenging interbedded geology, with operators experiencing bits that dulled quickly and a limited rate of penetration. Frustrated at its lack of drilling success in the Permian, one such operator turned to PV Fluid Products for a solution.

TRIUMPH AT EAGLE FORD

Eagle Ford is a notorious challenging field for power sections past their breaking point. With high temperature swings downhole and aggressive mud systems; many experience unacceptably high rates of failure. One operator sought our expertise to solve their problems.

We acquired the client’s failed power sections and dissected each one to identify the root causes of failure. With those insights, our chemical, mechanical, and applications engineers then worked together to develop a power section that would meet the unique demands of the drilling project. Resistant to chemical swell and designed to excel in high temperatures, HS88 was the ideal choice to be at the core of the power section. Our client was involved throughout the process as we defined problem areas and shared our unique insight into power sections, establishing the foundation for a collaborative partnership.

With the HS88-driven power section in place, the client’s failure rate decreased from 38% to 12%, and the ROP increased by 21%. The client was so impressed with the performance of HS88 that they mandated that all their wells in Eagle Ford use HS88 moving forward, and have continued to collaborate with the application engineers at PV Fluid Products to engineer solutions that will push their operations to new operational levels.

When you need more torque and power, choose the elastomer engineered for the world’s most demanding drilling conditions. Use HS88. When It Matters Most.

Once in touch, we worked closely with the customer to identify their problem areas. Our engineers and field specialists were on site, working side by side with the client. With our experience on power sections, and with the history of success in the Permian Basin, we identified the issues and made recommendations for power section fit criteria, as well as a new high strength, hard rubber nitrile stator elastomer that would excel in Permian’s conditions: HS88.

With this new set-up, our customer reported a 21% improvement in their rate of penetration, setting a new record for the area. No longer plagued by bits that dulled quickly, the improved power sections with HS88 at its core delivered maximum horsepower downhole, and drilled to TD in one run. The customer preferred our constant communication and expertise in power sections, and we have continued to work closely to find ways to optimize their performance in the Permian.

When you need a power section partner that you can count on, choose the trusted drilling experts that give personal service and around-the-clock support. Choose PV Fluid Products and HS88. When It Matters Most.

STAYING COOL IN BAKKEN

With temperatures exceeding 300 degrees Fahrenheit, the basin conditions in the Bakken Formation can be unforgiving. Combined with depleted fractured zones, complex well geometry, and water-based mud with extremely aggressive additives, one prominent directional drilling company needed our expertise to find the right combination to get the job done.

Our field specialists and engineers went to Bakken and immediately got to work. Through failure analysis and mud compatibility tests, we worked closely with the customer to identify what went wrong. Our experts pinpointed the reasons for failure and developed recommendations for a power section fit that would address their specific issues. At the heart of the solution was HS88, our new hard rubber composition proven to excel in high temperatures and the most challenging drilling situations.

The operator drilled a record 3 ¼ mile long lateral section as a result. They were thrilled to report that the mud motor tracked well and responded to directional drilling requirements. HS88’s lower derating factor enabled the drill to perform in the extremely high temperatures downhole, minimizing and eliminating chunking failures that previously plagued operations.

When you need to drill in the world’s most demanding drilling conditions, choose the elastomer engineered so you can drill with more power, for longer. Choose HS88. When It Matters Most.

WHO DO YOU CALL?

Facing a high rate of failure and with no answers to chunking in their Eagle Ford operation, a prominent directional drilling company was desperate for a solution. After hearing of competitor’s successful runs in the same area, they called the power section manufacturers that helped make it happen.

We listened to their problem areas and shared our knowledge from years of real-world application and lab research. Our engineering teams analyzed the client’s unique downhole issues, and with insights from our past success in Eagle Ford combined with our state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities, we developed the power section geometry and fit to address those unique issues. The high-strength, hard rubber composition of HS88 made it the ideal elastomer for the rigors of Eagle Ford, as it was both capable of greater differential pressures and resistant to power section chunking.

The result? ROP improved by 42% and previous problems with chunking became a distant memory for the client. We have also applied our learnings to continually engineer improvements to our power sections, and the superior technology is now found in other wells in Eagle Ford.

When you need a power section to last longer, choose the elastomer proven to conquer the world’s most demanding drilling conditions. Choose HS88. When it matters most.
